Presented for sale is this stunning, black on black 1989 Porsche 944 S2 coupe with only 30,563 original miles. I believe this is one of finest surviving examples of the 944 S2; it’s certainly the nicest that I have come across. Ultra-low miles, makes this a candidate for PCA Club concours, a great daily driver or whatever your pleasure may be.
The 944 S2 Porsche
If you are already familiar with the Porsche 944 S2 model, you can skip down to the detailed description of this particular example. If not, here’s a quotation from the factory brochure with some of the highlights:
For more than 30 years, Porsche engineers have used the "S" designation proudly. It says "this is our Super version of this Porsche sports engine." In the case of the 944 S2, it also carries the engineer's pride of being the second generation of a "Super" version. The first-generation 944 S of 1987 was the first liquid cooled Porsche 4 cylinder engine to employ 4 valves per cylinder. The 1989 944 S2 engine is a full 20% larger than that engine, making it, at 3.0 liters and 208 bhp, one of the most powerful naturally-aspirated fours in the world today.
Also in true Porsche tradition, the new 944 S2 engine's impressive specifications are derived directly from Porsche's successful racing heritage: high durability forged pistons; a new block pattern air intake system for optimum throttle response; active, regulated engine compartment ventilation with 3-speed blower; large, externally mounted light alloy oil cooler with thermostat for optimum engine temperature regulation; and modified digital motor electronics. Maximum torque of 207 lb-ft is reached at 4100 rpm; the engine's 208 bhp maximum power is achieved at 5800 rpm with the redline at 6500 rpm. The Porsche 944 S2 owner can depend on the balance of their automobile being fully compatible with the new high output engine. The suspension, transmission, competition tested four-piston brake system with ram air cooling, shock absorbers and stabilizers are borrowed directly from the famed 944 Turbo.
The S2’s combination of power, good low-end torque and superb handling make it what many consider to be one of the very best “all around” sports cars ever produced. It’s a competent, reliable and supremely FUN daily driver and a great vehicle for weekend track/DE events.
Interior Condition
As you can see from the photographs, this car is in extraordinary condition, as one would expect from a low-mileage, well cared-for example.
The interior condition is near-perfect. No dash cracks. No tears, cracks or wear on seats. All systems (including the infamous digital clock!) working. Nice aftermarket floor mats with red “944” embroidered in center of black mats.
Spare tire and jack look as though they’ve never been touched. Original equipment Porsche air-compressor included. (Note one of the hinges on the air-compressor case is broken.)
Exterior Condition
Exterior is freshly detailed and really stunning. Original paint. Some very minor rock chips and tiny imperfections as might be expected, but overall a 9.5/10. No history or indication of any paintwork/resprays or accident damage whatsoever.
Mechanical Condition/History
Recent maintenance, with receipts, performed at 27,588 miles includes new timing and balance shaft belts and tensioner rollers. At the same time the air conditioning system was converted to R134 with the compressor and receiver/drier replaced. AC blows cold.
My only recommendation for the car at this point would be replacement of the rear shock absorbers. Current shocks are replacements from a previous owner and IMHO are not up to the Porsche standard. A nice set of Koni adjustable for the rear would be my suggestion.
In the interest of full disclosure, the current Carfax report contains an inaccurate/untrue entry of 111,047 miles on July 27, 2004. This is incorrect! I have a Carfax from a previous owner dated well after this date that is without the entry. All previous and subsequent entries in the Carfax are consistent with the true mileage. Autocheck, Carfax’s main competitor, has no such entry. I have contacted the garage where the entry supposedly originated and they have no record of ever seeing this car. Most importantly, the car is obviously a very low-mileage example and prospective buyers are encouraged to verify this in person or with a local pre-purchase inspection.
This car has been a real pleasure to own and a wonderful car to drive. It’s as close to a “new-car” experience as one is likely to have with a car built in 1989…and this “new-car” is a PORSCHE! If you’ve been searching/waiting for a really special S2, this is your chance to purchase a rare, all-original survivor. |
